Description
1814 O.107 Capped Bust half dollar, NGC VF30.Note that this is Die State 107.3, as described by the very informative, new BHNC publication, "Die State Progressions of the Capped Bust Half Dollar Die Varieties 1807-1836" (which is available from us exclusively, either here on ebay or on our website).
The 1814 O.107 die marriage is an incredibly interesting one. There is so much to unpack here...starting with Overton's original description of the late die state as having a die crack vertically thru the date. No one has ever seen that crack, and lots of people have been looking for it since 1970, a period of 54 years. We'd conservatively guesstimate that about 4.6 million person-hours have been wasted in that effort (just kidding, but you get the point). That die crack does not exist. But, very interesting, late die states do exist, and they were struck AFTER these same dies were used to produce the most famous Bust half pattern ever...the Platinum, Judd-44, known to the extent of only 3 examples. And then there's this coin, which represents a solidly middle die state, with the clear evidence of die deterioration...clashes, general weakening of the dentils and a die chip in the right angle of the N on the reverse. Best of all, this coin is a wonderfully preserved, slightly crusty, totally original example without the slightest problem or distraction. Magnificent quality, originality and eye appeal! Enjoy!
There are new books on Capped Bust Halves that you should be aware of, and we can supply you with copies of each. Serious collector and researcher Robert Powers has recently published two volumes: "US Half Dollars, 1807 - 1826, Variety Attribution Guide" (Volume 1), and "US Half Dollars, 1827 - 1836, Variety Identification Guide" (Volume 2). Powers' work is not intended to take the place of Overton, but rather to serve as very useful and informative adjuncts to those books. Various shortcuts, tips and a bit of a different way of looking at attribution is what Powers does best, and we find further information - in any form - to be both interesting and helpful.
