Description
1814 O.106a R4 Capped Bust half dollar, PCGS VF detail, code 98 for damage.Note that this is Die State 106.3, as described by the very informative, new BHNC publication, "Die State Progressions of the Capped Bust Half Dollar Die Varieties 1807-1836" (which is available from us exclusively, either here on ebay or on our website).
This really is an Overton variety that only a mother could truly love! It was struck from an obverse die that had been repeatedly clashed and lapped and generally abused, though interestingly, it had not cracked. Finally, after producing many O.105's and then a smaller number of O.105a's (the famous Single Leaf variety), that reverse die was scrapped, and this reverse die was put in the press. A very few coins were struck from the die before it started to fall apart. Here, that reverse die is on its last legs - the obverse die is way beyond that point - and it has produced a split-level coin with monster cracks literally covering the lower half. A great coin for the serious Overton collector, and one that puts a pretty fine point on challenges they clearly dealt with everyday at the first US Mint. Oh, the damage? It is some scattered extra shallow marks on the reverse.
