Description
1809 O.111 Capped Bust half dollar, PCGS VF30. From the collection of Lane Brunner, earlier from DJF-Coins.Note that this is Die State 111.3, as described by the very informative, new BHNC publication, "Die State Progressions of the Capped Bust Half Dollar Die Varieties 1807-1836" (which is available from us exclusively, either here on ebay or on our website). A nice, crusty, antique toned example of this scarcer, early date, but there are some fairly dense hairlines hiding under the pretty, natural toning.
Dr. Lane J. Brunner was a great friend and customer of DKRC for many years. He was a very accomplished person, and was most recently the Founding Dean of the School of Pharmacy at University of Texas, Tyler. He collected many things, but Bust half dollars were his true love. He assembled a collection of nearly 650 of them, including 440 die varieties as well as many rare die states. His coins are uniformly choice and pleasing, with virtually all being PCGS graded, and more than half CAC approved as well. We mourn his passing at a very young age and miss him greatly, but we are honored to be handling the sale of the entire collection for his family.
There are new books on Capped Bust Halves that you should be aware of, and we can supply you with copies of each. Serious collector and researcher Robert Powers has recently published two volumes: "US Half Dollars, 1807 - 1826, Variety Attribution Guide" (Volume 1), and "US Half Dollars, 1827 - 1836, Variety Identification Guide" (Volume 2). Powers' work is not intended to take the place of Overton, but rather to serve as very useful and informative adjuncts to those books. Various shortcuts, tips and a bit of a different way of looking at attribution is what Powers does best, and we find further information - in any form - to be both interesting and helpful.
